Keeping your workplace safe
Employers must keep electrical equipment safe. A test record shows you've done that — for your staff, your customers and your insurer.
Questions
Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
The law doesn't name PAT testing. But the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 say equipment must be kept safe, and testing with records is the usual way to show you've done that.
How often should we test?
There's no fixed rule. HSE says it should depend on the risk — how the equipment is used and where. We'll suggest a sensible date and write it on your report.
Will it disrupt our work?
We work around you, and can come in the evening or at the weekend. Each item is only unplugged for a minute or two.
