Questions
What is PAT testing?
It's a safety check of electrical items that plug in. We look for damage, then test each item with a calibrated tester.
Is it a legal requirement?
The law doesn't name PAT testing. But the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 say equipment must be kept safe, and testing with records is the usual way to show you've done that.
How often is it needed?
There's no fixed rule. HSE says it should depend on the risk — how the equipment is used and where. We'll suggest a sensible date and write it on your report.
What needs testing?
Anything with a plug or a lead, like kettles, computers, chargers, power tools and extension leads.
What happens if something fails?
Simple faults like a fuse or plug are fixed and retested on the spot. Anything else is labelled FAIL, taken out of use, and the reason is written on your report.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. You get a certificate and a full list of every item tested, sent by email.
How long does it take?
A small office or holiday let usually takes a morning. Bigger sites take longer — we'll tell you when we quote.
Do you cover my area?
We cover Barnstaple, Bideford, Ilfracombe, Braunton, South Molton, Northam, Torrington, Woolacombe and the villages around them.
